When the Nokia 6110 Navigator was launched it was one of the first mobile phones to go head-to-head with personal navigation devices (PNDs) from companies like TomTom. At the time the PND segment was one of the fastest-growing consumer electronics device categories outside the mobile phone market. Arguably phones like the 6110 Navigator signalled the demise of these standalone PNDs in a similar manner to the impact mobile phones had on digital cameras and MP3 players. The 6110 Navigator was the second Nokia phone after the Nokia N95 to feature built-in GPS. Unlike the N95, the 6110 Navigator also included pre-loaded navigation maps powered by Route 66 whose application was built into the phone's firmware. The maps for different geographic regions were stored on a bundled memory card.  The phone had a dedicated navigation button that looked like the points of a compass, which activated the built-in Route 66 navigation software when pressed. To promote the phone, Nokia worked with celebrities Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman who used the 6110 Navigator as part of their 'Long Way Down' TV show when they completed a three-month, 24,000 kilometre journey from Scotland to the southern-most tip of Africa on motorcycles.
