This NFC-enabled variant of the Nokia 6131 (model number: RM-216) was announced at the CES Show in Las Vegas in January 2007. It was described as a handset that served as a credit card, loyalty card and travel ticket. Nokia showed off a variety of potential NFC applications at its CES booth when the phone was launched. These demos included examples such as NFC-assisted tag-to-connect connectivity between a printer and a phone using Bluetooth, and the ability to share an image between a digital picture frame and a phone.  The NFC functions were powered by NXP Semiconductor technology. The phone was also used in an early proof-of-concept trial run in London by TFL (Transport for London), Barclays, Consult Hyperion and the O2 mobile network to prove the use of NFC phones as electronic tickets for train journeys. It was pre-loaded with an Oyster card (for use on the London public transportation network) and a pre-paid Visa payment card loaded with £250 of funds allowing trialists to make purchases from contactless payment terminals which were quite a novelty at the time. The Nokia 6131 NFC was Nokia's first mass-market NFC-enabled phone. Nokia had previously offered NFC on prototype versions of the Nokia 3220 and Nokia 5140.
