The Asha 201 was a single SIM version of the Nokia Asha 200. These devices were part of Nokia’s new Asha family of devices which were launched at the Nokia World event in London in October 2011. This was notable for being the event when the Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710, the first Nokia smartphones powered by Windows Phone, were launched. The product name Asha was derived from Hindi - meaning 'hope'. Nokia claimed Asha signified “Nokia's focus on positive user experiences and connecting millions of people to new opportunities that help them reach their aspirations.” The Asha phones were designed to “blur the line between smartphones and feature phones” with the goal of “connecting the next billion mobile phone users”. The range offered qwerty and touch screen products, fast and easy access to the Internet, integrated social networking, messaging and “world-class applications from the Nokia Store.” Nokia described the Asha 201 as being “ideal for young consumers who wish to stay socially connected, are price conscious and like listening to music.” The phone had a focus on music with a built-in loudspeaker, stereo FM radio, “ringtone tuning” and an astonishing 52 hours of music playback time with one charge of the battery. It also included the Nokia Browser which provided an optimised browsing experience that reduced data usage. The phone also supported push email and “the popular WhatsApp messaging app.” When it started shipping in the first quarter of 2012 it cost approximately €60.
