The Asha 303 was announced at the Nokia World event in October 2011. It was a feature phone targeted at emerging markets and used Nokia’s Series 40 Touch and Type interface.
For a feature phone, it boasted impressive hardware specifications. It supported 3G HSDPA and had a 1 GHz processor which helped speed up browsing, downloads and gaming. It had a 3.2-megapixel camera.
The Asha 303 included a pre-installed version of Angry Birds Lite. It also supported Facebook access, and links to Orkut and other social networks were planned. In addition, the phone shipped with the Nokia Browser as standard. This was based on technology gained from Nokia's acquisition of Novarra. The browser compresses data traffic to give a better experience of the Web, even on slower networks.
The inclusion of Nokia Maps for Series 40 and WhatsApp as standard helped the Asha 303 compete with the BlackBerry 8520 in some markets as a mass-market messaging device.
When it launched the Asha 303 cost €115.
