The EF81 was the first of a trio of BenQ-Siemens mobile phones. It was announced at the same time as the S68 and S88.
The3G-capable EF81 had strong similarities to the highly successful
Motorola Razr V3 with a very similar laser-cut keypad. At the time, it was considered "ultra-thin" at just 1.6cm thick.
The casing comprised a mix of magnesium, stainless steel and aluminium, and the 1.3-inch external colour display featured sapphire glass to prevent scratches.
The main display was a 2.2-inch (240 x 320) featuring 262,144-colours. It also included a swivelling two-megapixel camera with with five-times digital zoom that could be used for rear facing image capture when the phone was closed and as a front facing camera for video calls when the phone was open.
There was also an on-board media player with MP3, AAC+, MPEG 4, RealVideo 8 and 9, h.263, and 3GPP support and a MicroSD card slot to allow users to store their own media files.
