The Motorola Defy Mini (model number: XT321) extended the highly successful original Motorola Defy range, offering a ruggedised entry-level device that brought Motorola's 'life-proof' Defy branding to the budget segment.
The Defy Mini's defining characteristic was its durability. It featured the dust- and water-resistance synonymous with the Defy series, and its 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen used Corning Gorilla Glass to resist scratches.
It cost approximately €160 and was designed for budget-conscious consumers who needed a resilient phone for active lifestyles or demanding work environments, but couldn't afford a premium rugged device.
It featured Motorola’s MotoSwitch user interface and its Social Graph feature, which gave users easy and fast access to the key people they wanted to contact. The more frequently a user communicated with someone, the bigger their icon became. The Activity Graph similarly provided quick, easy access to users’ favourite apps, automatically updating the interface to reflect the most-used apps.
Unfortunately, the Defy Mini was underpowered with a mere 600 MHz processor and 512MB of RAM, which led to sluggish performance, even by 2012 standards.
However, its dual-SIM functionality and rugged design helped it carve out a specific niche.
At launch, it targeted the Greater China, Europe, and Latin America markets.
