The Nokia E5 was a successor to the popular E63, which was seen as a mass-market alternative to the hugely successful E71 when it launched in November 2008. The E5 was a well-timed product for Nokia. The advent of Windows Phone 7 had seen many of Microsoft's manufacturing partners shifting to this more consumer-centric platform and away from Windows Mobile 6.5. A shrinking range of business devices on Windows Mobile 6.5 opened up a substantial opportunity for Nokia.
