When it was launched, the BT Emerald was described as “a quite exceptional combination of style and practicality”.  It was designed for use on the analogue ETACS network. The sales brochure referred to it as a “slim but rugged transportable” that weighed “just 2.2kg” but also delivered up to 75 minutes of talk-time “packing enough power to satisfy even the most demanding user.” It was regarded as a “sophisticated cellphone with an impressive list of advanced features” and had a “clearly laid out keypad” that BT claimed made it “incredibly easy to use.” The phone could store up to 99 names and numbers and had a 16-character alphanumeric LCD display.
