The Ericsson GA 628 is an historically important device as it was the first phone that offered four interchangeable colour panels (blue, green, red and yellow). These were included in the box with the phone that could be slotted in around the keypad. Also included were colour coordinated rings that could be added beneath the antenna. Another example of personalisation on this device was the ability to select a pre-loaded ringtone.
Prior to the arrival of the GA 628, most phones were black or grey. Interchangeable covers and other phone personalisation options went on to be a major trend on mobile phones in subsequent years.
The Ericsson GA 628 had an address book that could store up to 99 telephone numbers with associated names on the phone's memory with additional storage capacity within the SIM card. The first nine entries in the address book could be accessed using keypad speed dialling and a record was kept of the five most recent calls made.
The GA628 could send and receive SMS text messages and provided a range of call timers.
