The Lumia 520 was an entry-level smartphone powered by Windows Phone 8 which was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona in February 2013. It was announced at the same time as the Nokia Lumia 720. There was growing positivity at Nokia at this time as its Lumia devices were starting to get some traction after a very challenging start. The Lumia 520 was designed to expand the portfolio to lower price points and was seen as a strong potential volume driver for the company. It was the cheapest Lumia device to date but faced tough competition from an explosion of sub-$150 Android smartphones. President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia, Stephen Elop, described the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720 as providing Nokia with "the building blocks to win.” His optimism around the Lumia 520 was valid when in September 2013 it became the best-selling Windows device in the world, selling more units than any other model of Windows phone, PC or tablet. In July 2014 the company revealed it had sold 12 million units. By 2016, three years after its launch, it was still the most used Lumia device in the market. The phone is now regarded as the best-selling Lumia phone of all time.
