The HTC Magic was announced on February 17, 2009, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. That was the day after Vodafone unveiled its exclusive variant of this smartphone, the Vodafone Magic. While both phones shared the same physical design and core components, HTC's retail version differed from the operator-branded Vodafone Magic in a few areas. The HTC Magic's memory configuration featured 288MB of RAM, providing a more stable and powerful experience than the Vodafone Magic, which was limited to 192MB of RAM. It also ran HTC’s user interface on top of Android, rather than the default Android 1.5 (Cupcake) user interface used on the Vodafone variant. This offered custom iconography and came pre-installed with proprietary apps including HTC Mail, Quick Office, a PDF Viewer, and the game Teeter. Finally, the standard HTC Magic was sold carrier-unlocked, whereas the Vodafone Magic was sold locked to the Vodafone network across the European markets where it was available.
