This phone was designed by Graham Tulett who was working at London-based Atlantic Design at the time. He worked with a Maxon engineer called Simon Finch to help “style the phone”. This was challenging as it was the early days of phone design and manufacturers were taking different design approaches. Graham describes how the team went with “a slightly military look which was seen as looking high tech in those days.” Although the Atlantic Design team pushed for more contemporary designs they were regarded as being too modern. A more radical design also presented challenges around how to integrate key components into the device. The Maxon EPC590E is believed to date from 1989.
