The Nokia 7200, was a fashion-inspired clamshell phone. At the launch, Nokia described the 7200 as “artistically blending modern mobile technology with contemporary design trends, highlighted by an ensemble of tailored, ornamental textile covers.”
Nokia believed it was tapping into “a growing number of mobile-savvy, style-conscious consumers wanting more than just modern technology, but a mobile that reflects the latest fashion trends and appeals to their highly individualized sense of style."
The “coordinated Style Pack” allowed users to "dress up" their mobile phone with several “ornamental textile covers in fashionable colours and designs, a wrist strap and matching pouch” being included in the box.
Nokia also offered users the ability to download matching wallpapers and screensaver graphics that were coordinated with the physical cover.
Nokia’s Vice President and Chief Designer,
Frank Nuovo described the Nokia 7200 design as being “infused with imagery and ornamentation of exotic cultures and modern science” while noting that “the use of elegant textiles - a first for Nokia - stimulates the senses with a luminous, luxurious look and feel."
An additional feature offered on the phone was the introduction of “presence-enhanced contacts”. This allowed a user to share their availability and whereabouts with colleagues, family, friends and other contacts. For example, the phone profile could be changed to 'Meeting' and inform contacts to get in touch via a text message. There was also a “presence-enhanced Chat function” where users could create their own private chats and invite others to participate, or even join public chats groups.
