Nokia introduced its first large-screen Lumia smartphones at its Nokia World Event in Abu Dhabi in October 2013. The Lumia 1520 and its sister product the
Lumia 1320 featured a six-inch screen with Nokia describing them as “perfectly suited for entertainment and productivity”. It was a high-tier product that occupied a position in Nokia’s product portfolio between the
Lumia 625 and the flagship 41-megapixel
Lumia 1020.
The products were considered to be very large at the time, falling into the Phablet category that had been pioneered by Samsung with its
Galaxy Note. They were also Nokia’s first phones to include a 1080p full HD display. The larger screen allowed a third column of tiles on the home screen to increase usability.
The phones featured an evolution of the Fabula design language, featuring a combination of a polycarbonate casing and curved 2.5D glass, which was first used on the
Nokia N9 and
Nokia Lumia 800 and many subsequent Lumia devices.
The Lumia 1520 also exploited Nokia’s imaging expertise incorporating a 20-megapixel PureView camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) which enabled “sharp images even in the dark as well as oversampling and zooming technology similar to the Lumia 1020.”
Nokia also added a new “Storyteller” application which analysed a user’s camera roll based on time, date and location and a multitouch “zoom-out” gesture from a photo revealed a map where the picture was taken and showed other images taken nearby.
When it shipped the Lumia 1520 was available in yellow, white, black and glossy red and had an estimated retail price of US$749.
