Lumia 900 – 9 Jan 2012   The Nokia Lumia 900 was officially announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2012, initially as an exclusive device for US carrier, AT&T. This came just a few months after the announcement of the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 and it was immediately positioned as Nokia’s new flagship Lumia smartphone. With no game-changing products announced by any manufacturer at CES that year, the Lumia 900 gained good media coverage and received some awards. Nokia described the Lumia 900 as the “first Nokia smartphone designed specifically for the US” with features including 4G LTE network support and a larger 4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display when compared to the 3.7-inch display on the Lumia 800. The significance of the Lumia 900 to the US market was underlined in comments from the President of Nokia Americas, Chris Weber, who stated that “the introduction of the Nokia Lumia 900 with AT&T [was] another significant milestone in the ongoing rollout of Nokia’s global smartphone strategy”. He went on to comment that it signified “a new dawn for Nokia in the US.” Importantly, the device also featured a front-facing camera – something that was a notable omission on the Lumia 800. The Lumia 900 was shipped with the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system (which had the codename Mango). This was later updated to Windows Phone 7.8. However, controversially it was not possible to update the Lumia 900 to Windows Phone 8 as it did not have the necessary hardware capabilities to support it.
