The N800 Internet Tablet was announced at CES 2007 and replaced the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. It was designed to help Nokia break into a number of new business areas such as Internet-based applications and open source Linux development. The N800 is not technically a phone as it did not include a cellular radio, but it was an important device category in Nokia’s history. As it was not a cellular phone it gave Nokia much more scope to experiment as there was no requirement for type approval or operator certification. Also, it did not have to be sold through operator channels so Nokia was able to easily strike up a partnership deal Skype. The N800 has a better processor that the 770, stereo speakers and a pop out webcam (on the top left hand side of the device). However, with an unsubsidised retail price of €400, the N800 was consigned to being a niche product.
