The Optimus Vu, which had a quirky five-inch 4:3 ratio display, debuted in March 2012 in South Korea. By August, when the international version was announced, it had sold over 500,000 units. LG also offered the phone in Japan where it was received positively by consumers. The international variant used Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor which also had a “5th battery-saver core” which was used for voice calls, email, music and video playback and ensured the phone consumed less power. According to LG, the Optimus Vu “blurred the line between traditional tablets and smartphones for a truly unique smart device experience”. At the time, the phone was considered to be huge – although LG described it as “a device that [was] both pocketable and spacious.” The president and CEO of LG’s mobile division, Dr. Jong-seok Park, was extremely bullish about the device noting that “the different form factor makes Optimus Vu unique even in the 5-inch smartphone category which we expect will catch on once they become more widely available”.
