The San Diego Android smartphone powered by Intel technology on the 6th June The feature-packed San Diego from Orange features Intel’s Atom processor, as well as HD Voice, HD Video and an 8MP camera with ‘burst’ capture mode The San Diego was the first Intel-powered smartphone to launch in Europe. Intel was desperately trying to break into the mobile phone semiconductor market at the time and was extremely excited about this product. It was powered by the Intel Atom Z2460 processor and supported 3G HSPA+ using the Intel XMM 6260 Platform. Intel claimed these “delivered users a fast and responsive browsing experience”. The San Diego supported High-definition (HD) video offering 1080p video capture, image stabilization and HDMI out. The 8-megapixel camera featured a ‘Burst’ mode allowing it to take 10 pictures in under a second. Orange and Intel poured money into the launch supporting it with a multimillion-pound advertising campaign that featured across TV, outdoor, print and online. Intel was incredibly confident about the product with Intel Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Mobile and Communications Group, Mike Bell, stating “This new Intel-based smartphone exemplifies Orange’s focus on delivering a well-executed product to its users, from the quality and feel of industrial design to the overall software and applications experience.” Unfortunately when the phone launched it did not live up to expectations with numerous software issues, poor overall performance and a terrible camera.
