The Palm Treo 500v was announced by the Vodafone Group as part of its Christmas 2007 handset portfolio. It was announced at the same time as the
Samsung i640V and
Vodafone 920 which was manufactured by HTC.
The use of a Windows Mobile in this line-up was particularly significant as it marked the positioning of the platform specifically for the consumer market rather than the business environment. Enterprise-centric devices had constituted Microsoft’s and most licensees focus to date.
Vodafone as unveiled its own specific user interface (UI) which was mandated on all Windows Mobile products within its portfolio including the Palm Treo 500v. The user interface had been specifically designed to adapt the platform for a consumer audience and represented a substantial improvement to the core UI of Windows Mobile.
