The PG-6100 “multimedia phone” was described by Pantech as being targeted at “young, trend conscious, style savvy consumers”.
Pantech designed the phone to combine a clamshell phone and digital camera which it christened a “complete convergence device" as well delivering “a trendy, innovative look and design”.
At the launch of the device, Pantech’s President identified the target customer as being “a young person who is keen to show that they have a unique outlook and perspective on the world".
In order to make the phone look like a digital camera, Pantech took the unusual decision of moving the external screen to the back of the device. This made the phone very counter-intuitive to use as when someone called, you had to look at the back of the phone to see who it was and then spin it around to open the clamshell to answer the call.
In addition to its primary capability of offering a two mega-pixel camera, the phone also included an MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth and a voice memo function.
Initially the phone was shipped to Russia and was then introduced into the South Korean market. In 2006, Pantech started selling the phone in Argentina.
