The Atari Portfolio is cited as being “the world’s first palmtop computer” when it was launched in June 1989. It was developed in the UK by DIP Research and was subsequently licensed to Atari.
DIP was a company led by three former Psion employees with the first letter of the Christian names of the founders providing the company name: David Frodsham, Ian Cullimore and Peter Baldwin.
The device had a 40 x 8 character display supporting 240 x 64 pixels. The push buttons on the keyboard had the feel of buttons on a calculator. It was powered by three AA batteries.
A notable fact about this device is that it was used in the
Terminator 2: Judgement Day movie (1991) in a scene where the young John Connor tries to hack an ATM.
