When the T-Mobile Pulse was launched, the network operator described it “the world's first pay-as-you-go Android-based smartphone” claiming it was the most affordable Android smartphone globally. It was made exclusively for T-Mobile by Huawei (model number: U8220) and was the third Android handset offered by the network operator after the T-Mobile G1 and the G2 Touch. It was powered by the Android 1.5 version of the operating system. The phone featured a trackball for navigation and had a 3.5-inch HVGA touch-screen which was the largest display on an Android handset at the time. It had an auto-rotate capability. Although this is now a standard feature on all phones, it was quite unique at the time and made it easier to navigate websites and view content such as photos which had been taken on the 3.2-megapixel camera. T-Mobile also offered a mapping app, TeleNav, using the built-in GPS capability. At launch it cost £180 (US$240).
