The Motorola Satellite Series 9500 Portable Telephone was the first model of satellite phones released by satellite provider Iridium.
It was described by the company as ”a tool that transcended current communication offerings”. Despite its size, Motorola stated that it could offer “reliable satellite communications in the palm of your hand.”
The Motorola 9500 had a rugged design that was shock and dust resistant to cater for the extensive use cases anticipated for satellite phones being used in remote locations.
It had a standby time of 16 hours and a two-hour talk-time. It could also support data transfer speeds of 2,400 bits per second.
