The W705 Walkman phone was announced by Sony Ericsson in Liverpool, UK at the MTV Music Awards where the company was one of the main sponsors.
At the launch, the phone was described as “much more than a music phone with its exclusive metal finish, large screen and elegant and compact slider”.
The phone was also promoted for its built-in Wi-Fi capability with usage examples for owners such as watching video clips or streaming music wirelessly.
Music support remained important given it was a Walkman-branded product and the phone includes established Walkman features such as the music recognition application TrackID, SensMe for matching a user’s mood to the music they were listening to and Shake control to change tracks by shaking the device.
A variant of this device, the W705u Walkman, was announced at the same time. It supported UMA (unlicensed mobile access) which enabled seamless switching between mobile networks and wireless local area networks such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It was offered exclusively with network operator Orange in markets where it was present.
The W705 and W705u were available in silver and red.
