When it was unveiled in the US, the T18d (part of the
T18 family of devices) was described as “The Ultimate Go-Everywhere Mobile Phone”. It was a tri-mode device for use on TDMA networks which, according to Ericsson, meant it could offer “enhanced coast-to-coast coverage and better access in densely populated urban areas.”
The phone came with a serial interface cable and a CD that included Paragon’s FoneSync software (which had been developed in Newbury, UK). This allowed users to manage the phone book as well as sync and update the address book.
At the time, the T18d was one of the most compact devices on the market. It had a number of other features including the built-in SilentVibe capability, which could discreetly notify users of incoming calls. It also featured Ericsson's new EZ-Read user interface.
The phone came in several metallic and solid colours including metallic Champagne (a matte silver tone), Copper (the model in the museum collection), Indigo and Pewter. Ericsson described these as colours “that make a fashion statement day or night”.
