The Bittium Tough Mobile (model number: SD-41) was a Finnish-made secure and durable Android-based LTE smartphone “designed and built for demanding Mobile Security and Public Safety markets.”
Its unique selling point was its layered security approach with a hardware security element together with a secure boot and hardware integrity check which automatically ensured the integrity of the device hardware components and software at device start-up. It also featured disk encryption and tamper detection.
There were three variants of the Tough Mobile. The “standard” version (Tough Mobile) had Google apps pre-installed and is included in the Mobile Phone Museum collection.
Other variants included a phone without Google apps, the Bittium Touch Mobile R, designed for “restricted level data”, and the Bittium Touch Mobile C, a dual-boot device with two operating systems and total data separation designed for “confidential level data”.
The phone was announced in January 2016 and first showed at the Mobile World Congress trade show in February 2016.
