The V770 (model number SCH-V770) was introduced at the CeBIT trade show in Germany and was the world’s first mobile phone to feature a seven-megapixel camera. It was designed for use on cdma2000 1x EV-DO (800 MHz) networks in South Korea.
Samsung claimed that the V770 was able to offer “the same level of picture-taking sophistication as a seven-megapixel digital camera.” The camera included a 3x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom with a 1/1.8” CCD. It also supported autofocus and a flash unit that was “optimized for seven-megapixel photographs."
Interestingly, the V770 was designed to support an “attachable wide-angle and tele-conversion lenses” – the first time such an accessory had been offered on a mobile phone. The “tele-conversion lens” was able to boost the performance of the onboard optical zoom to 4.7 times (see picture below).
Other traditional camera-like capabilities on the V770 were manual controls to adjust focus, focal length (7.8-23.4mm), shutter speed (from 15 seconds to 1/2000th of a second) and set AEL (Auto exposure lock). It was also possible to have manual control of exposure using Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority.
Every aspect of the V770 was equipped with the highest specification components such as the TFD-LCD (Thin Film Diode-Liquid Crystal Display) which offered QVGA resolution, the highest possible for a display of its size. The display was able to reproduce 16 million colours. Videos could be recorded in QVGA resolution at 15-30 frames per second. Other standard features included video on demand (VOD), and music on demand (MOD).
The phone also had a “Digital Power Amp” function that could provide "higher audio signal amplification and greater audio output".
The phone also supported 32MB MMC-micro memory cards boosting the onboard internal memory. It also had a TV-out capability allowing users to connect their phones to a TV to view still pictures or videos. Other features included an MP3 player, a business card reader, and support for 64-tone polyphonic ringtones.
The phone was a tremendous technology statement for Samsung. President & CEO Kitae Lee declared the V770 “set a new standard in phone industry” He went on to state that Samsung wanted to be a trendsetter “continuously introducing innovative new products and distinctive products for its consumers.”
