Although J-Phone launched its 3G network in 2002, commercially it didn't really take off until 2004 once Vodafone had taken over.
The V801SH was the first Sharp handset on its network to feature 3G (WCDMA) connectivity. It followed in the footsteps of the 2G PDC J-53SH and its 2G GSM sibling, the
GX30. The V801SH came with a one-megapixel camera, SD Card support and tri-band GSM global roaming (which was rare for Japanese phones at the time).
The phone marked the start of a long and successful run of 3G devices on the Vodafone (Japan) network, which would become Softbank in 2006.
