The Nokia 1011 is widely regarded as the first mass-market GSM (2G) phone. It had a similar design to the analogue (1G) Nokia 121, which was a business version of the
Nokia 101.
The Nokia 1011 can be easily distinguished from a Nokia 101 or Nokia 121 by the distinctive diamond shape of the earpiece.
Interestingly, the Nokia 121 used the same black keypad, which like the keypad on the 1011 suffered from wear at the edges resultingx in the keys turning white.
In order to make the phone as small as possible, Nokia engineered a groove into the removeable battery to accommodate the extendable antenna. However, the antenna was to become a source of controversy on the 1011. If a user only half extended it, the phone’s radio performance was significantly impacted, degrading call quality.
It has been reported that the phone was named the Nokia 1011 after its date of launch – 10
November 1992.
Nokia replaced the 1011 in 1994 with the
Nokia 2100. The Nokia 1011 was also marketed as the Mobira Cityman 2000.
