The RIM (BlackBerry) 957 Wireless Handheld (Model number: R957M-2-5) is almost identical to the 5810 and 5820 but was launched two years earlier and used the Mobitex network rather than the GSM-based technology. It had no support for voice calling.
The device had a full-graphic LCD grey/monochrome, backlit display with a 160x160 pixel viewing area and a user-selectable of either a 16- or 20-line display.
It had a 34-key QWERTY backlit keyboard and a mouse-type scroll wheel on the side of the device.
It was powered by the company's proprietary OS but unlike the
5810/
5820 it did not support a Java development environment.
In the press release accompanying the launch of the 957 it was described as "a new advanced, palm-sized wireless handheld with integrated support for wireless email, Internet, paging and organizer features optimized for mobile users and incorporating a large high-quality screen, 32-bit Intel 386 processor, 5MB flash memory, an easy-to use keyboard, embedded wireless modem, integrated organizer and full support for the award-winning BlackBerry wireless email solution."
It is widely regarded as a key device in the DNA of future BlackBerry products.
