From Tim Sagar: So, the Virgin phone is an extension of the Blue Button concept of the BC2, replacing the Blue button with a (Virgin) red one. Behind the button is a SIM Toolkit menu of services. This comes from the relationship with Tom Alexander and Joe Steel, who left Cellnet to create VirginMobile when Cellnet turned down the chance of offering Richard Branson an MVNO deal because he's announced his plan to bid for a 3G license. Cellnet saw this as a potential Trojan Horse. I met Richard in London with Jacques Combet, who was heading up Alcatel Mobile Phones at the time. Richard liked the hands free capability of the One Touch Easy, which was unique at the time, as a close friend of Richard's had died from a brain tumour and Richard blamed mobile phone use for this.
