The camera credentials of the Android-powered Lumix DMC-CM1 were reflected in the fact that Panasonic chose to launch it at the
Photokina tradeshow in Cologne rather than a mobile industry event.
It featured a large 1-inch 20-megapixel camera sensor which more typically was found in Panasonic's dedicated digital cameras. At the time it was the largest image sensor ever to have been offered on a smartphone and was approximately seven times larger than the 1/3
rd-inch sensors typically found on smartphones at the time.
The sensor was coupled with an F2.8 Leica lens offering the equivalent focal length of 28mm. The phone was also capable of recording 4K videos and capturing RAW images. Additional, advanced camera capabilities included focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance that could all be adjusted manually using a mechanical click-wheel around the lens ' barrel' on the front of the phone. There was also a dedicated button to activate the camera.
The build quality on the device was superb and reflected in its weight at over 200 grams. It was also considerably thicker than rival devices, primarily to allow the incorporation of the large image sensor.
At launch it cost approximately €900.
