When launched, the FOMA M1000, was the world’s first-ever WLAN-integrated W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS dual-mode smartphone. It was developed jointly by Motorola and NTT DoCoMo and was modelled the Motorola A1000 which had been offered in Europe and Asia. The M1000 was available in Japan from July 1, 2005, on the NTT DoCoMo network and was considered an important phone to aid Motorola’s re-entry into the Japanese mobile device market. Motorola claimed the FOMA M1000 was “designed to attract today’s increasingly mobile consumers who want connectivity with their workplace, their home, on the road and at play using one device.” It provided international roaming, full Internet browsing and high-quality voice and video communications, as well as the ability to send/receive e-mails to multiple addresses with attached files and view Microsoft Word and Excel documents. Motorola’s General Manager of Mobile Devices in North Asia, Michael Tatelman, stated that the company was positioning the FOMA 1000 “as a strategic offering to promote ‘must-have’ products in Japan’s sophisticated and highly developed market”.
