The Evo 4G was HTC’s first WiMAX device and the first smartphone to use this technology and run Android. The Samsung Mondi had been announced a few months earlier but was a connected PDA / Mobile Internet Device (MID) running Windows Mobile 6.1.
The Evo 4G was designed for use on Sprint's WiMAX network and took its external styling from the
HTC HD2. It included a CDMA radio for voice calls, dual-mode WiMAX and EV-DO connectivity for data, an eight-megapixel camera, a 1 GHz processor and an HDMI connector. It ran HTC's Sense interface on top of Android 2.1.
Removing the rear cover of the Evo 4G revealed a red plastic interior around the battery compartment – a design characteristic also used on the
HTC HD Mini which had a yellow plastic interior. HTC claimed the design reflected that “of high-performance cars, whose aesthetic quality under the hood was a critical element of owners' emotional attachment to them”.
The Evo 4G was a landmark device for several reasons in addition to its status as Sprint's first WiMAX smartphone.
