During 2015, TCL (which licenced the Alcatel brand) strengthened its portfolio with the Idol 3 smartphone. The Idol 4S (and Idol 4 and Idol 4+) built on this design and delivered competitive specifications at prices that ranged from €279 to €449 depending on memory configuration and screen size.
Alcatel cleverly made its new device stand out from the sea of similar mid-tier Android devices through an attractive accessory bundle and innovative packaging which doubled as a virtual reality headset for the phone (see below). Given the hype around virtual reality at the time this was considered a smart move.
The Idol 4S originally launched using the Android operating system, but in November 2016 Alcatel launched a Windows 10 Mobile variant of the device. It was sold exclusively by US carrier T-Mobile. The variant in the Idol 4S in the Mobile Phone Museum collection is powered by the Windows 10 Mobile operating system.
