Features

The Punkt MP 01 was unveiled at the London Design Festival in September 2015. This stripped-back mobile phone was conceived by Swiss entrepreneur and Punkt CEO, Petter Neby and was designed by British designer Jasper Morrison. The MP01 was made in small production runs featuring a Gorilla Glass screen, and a glass-fibre reinforced body that Punkt said was “treated with the same finishing processes used by manufacturers of professional camera equipment.” It was designed to be “an object of real beauty and style, both inside and out.” Punkt described it as delivering "the essential handset experience" offering the ability to only make phone calls and send SMS text messages together with a basic calendar and clock. At the launch, Petter Neby stated that “technology is a very powerful tool, but as our lives become increasingly complicated, it is important to find time to disconnect and rediscover the simple things” adding that "it is a liberating device that removes unnecessary distractions and goes back to the essentials of communication." The phone was somewhat ahead of its time with an emphasis on longevity. It was designed to be a “considered antidote to the throwaway culture”. Designer Jasper Morrison stated that the phone integrated “unique hardware and software design to achieve new levels of simplicity." He went on to note that it had been "created with a focus on call making with direct keys and an intuitive text-based interface” with the handset being created to offer “unhindered access to all functions, without complex navigation keys and menu systems." The phone was available in three colourways: black, brown and white, all of which are included in the Mobile Phone Museum collection.
