When the N412i was announced, NEC claimed it was “the world's thinnest clamshell mobile phone with a mega-pixel camera”.
The company had blended fashion with technology using NEC’s “proprietary, cutting-edge technology to create a modern, smart, compact design”.
The N412i was only 11.9mm thick when folded and weighed 96 grams. The N412i, which supported NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode service, was initially launched in the Australian market.
It boasted tri-band support making the phone attractive to international travellers, a 65k colour TFT crystal display and a 1.3-megapixel camera. It had an MP3 player and the ability to capture two-minute video clips. It also supported Java games and access to i-mode services such as email, news and movie reviews.
A variant of this phone, the N500iS was launched in Europe in February 2006.
