The NEC P4 was released in 1992. At the time it was considered a revolutionary device with its space-age-like design and compact profile. It was a popular, cutting edge analogue “1G” phone that worked on ETACS (
Extended Total Access Communication System) networks. It’s size and weight meant it was marketed “as the first phone which you could forget was in your pocket”. It cost £700 ($880) at time of launch (equivqlent to £1,261 ($1,660) in 2021).
It was an important product for the Vodafone network in the UK, who offered a
Vodac-branded version of this model to its customers. Vodac was a subsidiary of Vodafone that supplied phones and sold airtime to customers.
