The Sendo X2 was a tri-band GPRS smartphone announced at the 3GSM World Congress in February 2005. At the time it was the smallest, lightest smartphone in the world at 85cc’s and 95 grams.
The Sendo X2 was designed to be a “music mobile”. In addition to all the features of the
Sendo X, it incorporated a number of specific music-related features including MP3 and MP4 players and support for multiple other codec types. It also had a high-quality built-in speaker, Bluetooth support and a 10-band graphic equaliser, together with dedicated forward, rewind and play and pause keys mounted on the side of the phone.
The Sendo X2 pre-dated the
Apple iPhone by two years and the
Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman phone by over 6 months. The Sendo X2 also came with a 1.3-megapixel rear-facing camera, 32MB of internal memory expandable to 1GB via a full-size MMC card, and it had a 65K 2.2 inch TFT display.
The idea of a music-focussed smartphone was received very well, and in tests, the product secured good reviews in the mobile and consumer press.
Sendo was purchased by Motorola shortly after the announcement of the X2 and due to Motorola’s upcoming
ROKR E1 phone and Motorola’s relationship with Apple the X2 project was cancelled with only a few thousand phones being produced.
