Features

The T29 was first introduced for Asian markets in February 2001 and subsequently launched for European markets in March 2001. It had strong similarities to the design of the Ericsson T28. Ericsson described the phone as a “high quality and high-performance dual band phone” with numerous features including games, a vibrating alert, voice controls and extensive support for SMS text messages and “group-SMS” text messages and basic Internet access using a WAP browser. The phone also featured five games: Tetris, Erix, Ballpop, Catcher and Maze. A stand-out feature in the European variant was being the first Ericsson phone (together with the Ericsson T20e) to support the Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS). This made it possible to add pictures and sounds to text messages using the existing SMS service and related infrastructure. The phone was available in two colours featuring different “deep-coloured inlays” - amethyst purple and sapphire blue (this variant is included in the Mobile Phone Museum collection). It also had an “active flip” which allowed you to start and end calls by opening and closing the flip on the front of the phone. Ericsson added small “wings” to the active flap to make it easier to flip it open and shut. There were numerous variants. The T29s was intended for the Asian markets and included languages such as Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Vietnamese, and Tagalog are featured as well as English. The T29sc was designed for the Chinese market and had a “complete Chinese interface”. The phone was also compatible with a wide range of Ericsson accessories, including Bluetooth headset, FM radio, MP3, Chatboard, car holder and several hands-free solutions.
