The 8810 was notable for being Nokia’s first premium phone and also its first phone with an internal antenna. It’s striking chrome finish is reflected in its codename ‘Zippo’ given its similarity to the iconic Zippo lighter.
It had a five-line monochrome display with dynamic fonts which could be made larger if required.
The standard variant had a nickel-metal hydride battery which provided up to one hour of talk-time. There was also a lithium battery which provided a longer battery life of up to 2 hours 50 minutes.
Nokia was extremely concerned about the performance of the antenna, given it was the first phone where there was no external stub. In order to maximise the radio performance it weighted the phone so when users held it in their hand they would avoid the antenna. Despite these efforts, the phone did suffer from poor reception, partly due to the metal casing, albeit the antenna area was plastic. Another challenge of using an internal antenna was the negative impact on battery life as more power was required to sustain a call.
