This rare prototype of the Nokia 8810 Gold Edition was plated with 18-carat gold and was targeted at the Middle East and other regional markets. It is unclear how many were made, but it was only a very limited run. The phone got into the hands of a few senior Nokia folks and some important customers.
We’ve been told there were issues with the gold plating rubbing off on users’ faces which meant it was not a viable addition to the line-up. Furthermore, Nokia was struggling to make enough units of the standard 8810 at the time, so it was decided there was no point in trying to manufacture this more exclusive variant.
