The E680 was Motorola's first Linux-powered phone offered in North America. It was powered by MontaVista Linux and was described as an "entertainment phone".
At the time of launch, Motorola's charismatic chief brand officer, Geoffrey Frost, stated that “the device formally known as the cellphone is now a wireless entertainment portal, connecting users to the music, videos, artists they love, and the information they want”. Motorola also went on to create a partnership with MTV to support this vision.
The E680 had a quarter VGA (240×320 pixel) colour screen with support for portrait and landscape modes. It also had an integrated VGA (640×480) camera with an 8x zoom lens that could support MPEG4 video capture. There was also support for basic Internet access via a WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) Web browser and a variety of messaging clients, including email, text, and support for MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Gaming was also a focus area for the E680 which was able to support 3D games, including J2ME gaming and “8-way navi and gaming keys.”
