The GeeksPhone Keon was a 3G phone produced for developers wanting to create apps for the Firefox OS. The operating system was described as “a new mobile operating system built entirely using open web standards”. Mobile operator Telefonica was also involved in the launch. GeeksPhone was a small Spanish start-up company. The Keon phone was announced at the same time as the Peak phone.
The phones were designed to help “make the mobile web more accessible to more people”.
The phone had a bright orange housing and featured a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, a 3.5-inch screen and a three-megapixel camera.
It was released to developers in April 2013 and cost €91. The first batch sold out very quickly.
The phone in the museum collection was donated by
Peter Kihlstedt who was given it as a gift from Mozilla as he helped with the translation of Firefox and Thunderbird into Swedish.
