The S88 was announced by BenQ-Siemens at the same time as the
BenQ-Siemens EF81 and
S68. Compared to these devices the S88 was a less premium product but had a focus on photography being positioned as an alternative to a digital camera. It was available in both black and white variants.
It featured a two-megapixel camera with a 16x digital zoom and an LED light. The design of the phone bore a striking similarity to the
Sony Ericsson W800 (and the
Sony Ericsson K750). It had a mere 16MB of onboard memory for pictures, with additional storage available via a MicroSD slot. Photos could be printed directly using PictBridge technology, and beamed by Bluetooth.
Music was another focus and BenQ-Siemens claimed the phone "lusciously pampers the ears".
The S88 was designed for 2G GSM/GPRS networks but shipped at the time 3G was becoming an important inclusion.
