The XP7 (model number: XP7700) was an unusual venture for rugged phone maker Sonim as it was partially funded via a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. It eventually surpassed its initial goal of raising $150,000 securing a total of US$237,277 from 474 backers in 33 countries. This was far from the amount of money required to develop the phone but was part of efforts to broaden the appeal of Sonim's products to a wider audience. The company, which to that point had primarily made phones for people who worked in extreme environments, chose Indiegogo to try and expand its appeal with consumers. At the time, Sonim’s CEO Bob Plaschke, stated that over the previous nine years, the company had been building durable phones for “everyday heroes like police officers, firefighters and responders” but it felt that “when the outdoor community saw what Somin’s smartphone could do they would say: ‘Hey, that’s the perfect smartphone for our active lifestyles.'” The Sonim XP7 could be submersed in water and was drop-resistant, meeting IP68 and IP69 standards. It could also withstand a ton of metric pressure. The touch-screen display could be viewed clearly in direct sunlight and was usable with gloves. The Sonim XP7 was also known as the XP7 Extreme.
