The Nokia 5140i was designed for fitness enthusiasts and was described by the company as “an ideal training partner for fitness enthusiasts” and “active-minded consumers”. The phone came with a “Fitness Coach” application that enabled users to track their activity and allowed users to share their stats with “coaches and team-mates” via a text message. In many ways it was a forerunner to fitness trackers and smartwatches that have now become synonymous with activity tracking. Interestingly, Nokia partnered with fitness maker Polar and the phone could be connected to Polar’s “wrist computers” and training data could be “transferred and viewed graphically on the bright display of Nokia 5140i”. The phone could also be connected via Bluetooth to Polar’s heart rate monitor. In addition to its rugged design offering “dust and splash-resistance”, Nokia proudly promoted the fact that the phone met “the requirements of an upcoming EU environmental legislation (RoHS, 2002/95/EC), more than one year in advance”.
